My husband and I have always been drawn to the open road. There’s a special kind of freedom in packing the car and just… going. Recently, we embarked on a truly California dreamin’ road trip, starting in sunny San Diego and culminating in the dazzling lights of Las Vegas. And, being the travel and casino enthusiasts that we are, we incorporated some exciting casino stops along the way. This trip wasn’t just about the destinations; it was about the journey, the hidden gems we unearthed, and the memories we etched into our minds.
San Diego Delights: Sun, Sand, and Cityscapes
Our adventure began in beautiful San Diego. We checked into the luxurious Hilton Bayfront, which offered breathtaking views of the harbor. One of our first stops was the iconic Hotel Del Coronado, a Victorian masterpiece that exudes old-world charm. We strolled along the boardwalk imagining the countless stories those walls could tell. To truly immerse ourselves in the local culinary scene, we joined a Secret Food Tour in the Gaslamp Quarter. It was a delightful exploration of San Diego's diverse food scene, from fresh seafood to authentic Mexican cuisine. We also enjoyed a relaxing harbor cruise, which provided a unique perspective of the city skyline and the naval ships that call San Diego home.

Hitting the Jackpot: Casino Stops Along the Way
Our first casino stop was at Barona Resort & Casino. It was a great way to kick off the gaming portion of our trip. The atmosphere was lively, and we enjoyed trying our luck at the slots. From there, we ventured to Valley View Casino, known for its friendly staff and generous rewards program. Maximizing casino rewards is a key part of our road trip strategy. We always sign up for player's cards at each casino, which allows us to accumulate points and earn perks like free play, discounted meals, and even hotel room upgrades.
Next, we checked into Harrah's Southern California Resort. This resort is more than just a casino; it's a destination in itself. We indulged in a fantastic dinner at Hell's Kitchen, enjoying the culinary creations of Chef Gordon Ramsay (or at least, his team!). The next morning, we had a unique experience at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. We opted for the Deluxe Safari, which took us on a private tour through the park, getting up close and personal with rhinos, giraffes, and other incredible wildlife. It was a truly memorable experience.
Our next casino stop was at the grandest of them all (at least in California): Pechanga Resort & Casino. As the largest casino in the western United States, Pechanga boasts an impressive array of gaming options, restaurants, and entertainment venues. There’s even a people mover to get you from the parking garage into the casino! We spent a few hours exploring the vast casino floor and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

Exploring the Desert: Palm Springs and Beyond
Leaving the casinos behind for a bit, we headed towards Palm Springs, a desert oasis known for its mid-century modern architecture. We took a self-guided driving tour, admiring the iconic homes and buildings that define this unique architectural style. No trip to Palm Springs is complete without a stop at Shields Date Garden for a delicious date shake – a true taste of the desert.
From Palm Springs, we ventured to the Salton Sea State Recreation Area. This unusual landscape, with its high salinity and otherworldly feel, offered a stark contrast to the glitz and glamour of Palm Springs. It was a fascinating glimpse into a unique ecosystem.
Our next overnight stay was at the luxurious Agua Caliente Resort & Spa Rancho Mirage. This resort is a perfect blend of relaxation and entertainment, with a world-class spa, multiple restaurants, and a lively casino.

Nature's Wonders: Joshua Tree and the Mojave Desert
The next day, we explored the otherworldly landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park. We used the GuideAlong app for a self-guided driving tour, which provided fascinating insights into the park's geology, ecology, and history. The Joshua trees, the rugged rock formations, and the vast desert vistas were truly breathtaking.
As we continued our journey towards Las Vegas, we made a pit stop at the iconic Roy's Motel and Cafe on Route 66. This historic landmark is currently undergoing rehabilitation, and it was exciting to witness the efforts to preserve this piece of Americana.
Our drive took us through the vast and desolate beauty of the Mojave Desert National Preserve. The stark landscapes, the towering mountains, and the endless skies offered a sense of solitude and tranquility. It was a world away from the bustling casinos and vibrant cities we had visited earlier in our trip.

Vegas, Baby! The Final Stop on Our California Road Trip
Finally, we arrived in Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world. We checked into a newly remodeled suite at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The Rio's vibrant atmosphere and central location made it the perfect base for exploring the city. We spent our days exploring the Strip, catching shows, and indulging in the city's world-class dining scene. Of course, we also spent some time at the casinos, trying our luck at the tables and slots.
